Buckinghamshire is a county positively brimming with character, charm and charisma. Buckinghamshire has an impressive literary history with such household names as Mary Shelley, Jerome K Jerome and TS Elliot all having links with the county. Perhaps the most famous of all however is the family favourite Roald Dahl, who moved to Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire in 1954. There are two museums celebrating the work of the famous author, open to the public: The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, Great Missenden and Roald Dahl's Children's Gallery, Aylesbury.
Wonder
See the world in the eyes of a giant by visiting Bekonscot Model Village, the oldest model village in the World. Created in 1929 Bekonscot encompasses 6 miniature villages, all set in the style of the 1930's. Amongst the houses featured include a replica of Enid Blyton's former house in Hanton.
Thrills and spills
If you're looking to escape from reality for the day and enjoy some thrilling rides, then pay a visit to Gullivers Land, Milton Keynes. There are dodgems, a log flume, tree top swings and a jungle river ride; you can also let your imagination run riot in Lilliput.
Family fun in the outdoors
If you want to spend some real quality time with the family and make the most of the surroundings, Wendover Woods, north of Great Missenden, provide the perfect answer. With over 325 hectares of woodland it is ideal for cycle rides or orienteering exercises. If you fancy something less energetic you can take a picnic along and just sit and admire some of the views.
Activities
For the adrenaline seekers out there Buckinghamshire has fantastic facilities. The Xscape, Milton Keynes has England's biggest real snow slope, a cinema, gym complex and bowling alley . If you're not afraid of heights you could also try The Climb, a top of the range climbing centre in Amersham, instruction can be given if you are a novice.
Discovery
There is always something new to discover on a Buckinghamshire family holiday which is why you can visit time and time again. Waddesdon Manor, nearAylesbury the magnificent Rothschild treasure house, organises a regular programme of special events for families and for 2007 has a superb new children's adventure play area set in the magnificent grounds. For younger children Odds Farm Park, High Wycombe provides a great day out. With a whole range of interesting animals to see and learn about, it proves to be a hit whatever the weather. Or you could step back in time and visit Chiltern Open Air Museum, Chalfont St Giles ,where buildings from the past have been preserved for all to admire. The whole family are made to feel welcome, including the dog!
