The Bodleian Library is one of the oldest public libraries in the world. It’s a striking building and the statistics are overwhelming. Founded in Oxford in 1320, there are seven million items in the Bodleian Library, housed on 118 miles of shelving.
Not far from the Bodleian Library is the Sheldonian Theatre. Designed by Christopher Wren, the circular Sheldonian Theatre was built for university ceremonies held in Oxford. Try to attend a concert here when you are in Oxford, the acoustics are amazing.
Shopping is good in Oxford, especially in the Oxford Covered Market. You’ll find lots to tempt you from traditional fare to more funkier items. Shopping in the Oxford Covered Market is especially tempting at Christmas.
Close to the Oxford Covered Market is the Carfax Tower, all that remains of an old church. Climb ninety-nine steps to the top for a view of all that’s special in Oxford, the dreaming spires of the many colleges – Christ Church, Magdalen, Corpus Christie and Trinity to name a few.
Punting on the Thames is popular in Oxford so is simply strolling by the river or exploring the Oxford University Botanic Gardens.
See wonders of the natural world in the University Museum of Natural History. The Ashmolean Museum is just bursting with priceless antiquities, it’s Britain’s oldest museum - so it’s no surprise to find it in Oxford.
